Threepwood is on the hunt for the elusive secret of Monkey Island once again, but so is his black-bearded zombie nemesis, Captain LeChuck, who leads a ghostly crew of the undead.

And the excellent Dominic Armato, the voice of Guybrush, is also back. But Gilbert and Grossman haven’t written off everything that happened to the series since they left – Murray, a grumpy demonic talking skull from Monkey Island 3, makes a return. Needless to say, purist fans have been bubbling over with excitement. Series originators Gilbert and Grossman made the first two but then left to work on other projects, and so have only just returned to the franchise. That isn’t to say every puzzle is so simple, but for the ones that are elusive enough to warrant an online search, Return to Monkey Island has a built-in hint system that is able to accurately track where players are in their journey, what objectives they are trying to achieve, and what extra steps need to be taken in order to succeed in cracking it.In Star Wars levels of chronological complexity, this game is technically only the third Monkey Island game, despite the fact that it is the sixth to bear that name. This only makes puzzle-solving more rewarding, simply for reaching far enough towards the unobtainable, without fully crossing it. Rather than bog itself down with a long list of potential verbs to correspond with items, a more streamlined two-button approach has been taken, with one often being used to describe something, and another to “action” it. Without spoiling any of the solutions – the usual tried-and-tested method of attempting to combine every item in your inventory with each other – puzzles feel just obnoxious enough without being irritating, and they rarely feel out of grasp. As a point-and-click, returning players can expect the usual branded method of lateral puzzle solving the series has become known for.
